Saltash is known as the Gateway to Cornwall, as it lies just across the River Tamar from Plymouth. It is home of the spectacular Royal Albert Bridge, which with its unique design, engineering and appearance, is counted as is one of the greatest bridges in the world. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and completed in 1859, this stunning bridge is a ‘must see’ for anyone visiting the area.
Saltash itself is a thriving town with a lively shopping centre offering excellent facilities, and with independent shops selling unique gifts and souvenirs. There are also pubs, restaurants and cafes and general retail shops for all of your holiday needs.
Saltash has easy access to other areas of Cornwall and Devon, from the sandy beaches of Whitsand Bay to the dramatic scenery of Bodmin Moor. Less than half an hour’s drive away, you will find the picturesque fishing village of Looe, with Polperro just 10 minutes further down the road.
On the Rame Penisula near Torpoint, you can find Mount Edgcumbe, a grand country House. If you want to extend your activity whilst on the castle grounds, why not try the latest precision and accuracy sport, Disc Golf, in which individual players throw a flying disc at a target. In the heart of the park, you can also find The Barrow Centre at Mount Edgcumbe, which provides something for everyone on a day out, from Adventure Segway to gifts made by local artisans and even treats for your hounds!
Another National Trust property, also located in Torpoint, is Antony House and Gardens. This superb early 18th Century mansion has been home to the Carew family for 600 years. There are numerous attractive woodland walks around the house, where you will find many exotic varieties of plants. The Woodland Garden was originally part of the Anthony House estate but is now managed separated by the Carew Pole Charitable Trust.
